Osun APC Pulls Out of Local Government Elections, Citing Appeal Court Ruling

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has officially withdrawn from the upcoming local government elections scheduled for Saturday, February 22, 2025.

The decision was communicated in a letter signed by Osun APC Secretary, Alao Olabisi Kamoru, and addressed to the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) on Wednesday.

Why APC Pulled Out
According to the letter, the recent Appeal Court judgment in Akure made the election unnecessary and unlawful. The APC referenced Appeal No. CA/AK/270/2022, which reinstated previously elected local government officials, effectively removing the need for fresh elections.

The letter stated:

📌 “By this judgment, the elected officers have resumed office as allowed by the Appeal Court ruling. The implication is that the local council seats are no longer vacant.”

Based on this legal development, the party declared that participating in the election would be superfluous and unlawful.

Sudden Change of Plans
The APC had been actively campaigning across all 30 local government areas in Osun State before making this last-minute decision.

This move has sparked political discussions, as it significantly alters the landscape of the February 22 elections.

What’s Next?
With the APC’s withdrawal, the election’s legitimacy and the participation of other political parties remain in question. Political analysts suggest that this could lead to:
✔️ A legal battle over the election’s validity.
✔️ A possible boycott by other parties.
✔️ Calls for postponement or cancellation of the elections.

All eyes are now on OSSIEC and Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration to determine the next steps.
