    I told my daughters to retaliate if their husbands slap them,” says Emir Sanusi at a National Dialogue on GBV Prevention.

    Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, has taken a firm stance against domestic violence, sharing a controversial yet empowering directive to his daughters. Speaking at the National Dialogue Conference on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Prevention in Kano, Sanusi revealed he instructs his daughters to retaliate if ever slapped by their husbands.

    Sanusi underscored the alarming statistics of domestic violence in Kano’s Shariah courts, where nearly half of the cases over five years involved severe injuries to women. The Emir criticized cultural misinterpretations of Islamic teachings and declared all forms of violence against women as haram (forbidden).

    He emphasized the importance of educating sons against abuse and empowering daughters to defend their dignity: “If you dislike her, send her back to me, but do not raise your hand against her.”

    The event, held at Bayero University Kano and supported by the Ford Foundation, brought together faith leaders, youth groups, and policymakers to align Islamic principles with modern strategies to combat GBV.

    Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II has been reinstated as the Emir of Kano, as per authoritative sources from LEADERSHIP. This development comes after the Kano State House of Assembly resolved to dethrone the current Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, and dismantle the four new Emirates created under a controversial 2019 law.

    Though not officially announced yet, reliable sources confirm that Sanusi II has been reinstated and is expected to return to Kano on Friday. According to insiders, “With the passage of the Bill, Sanusi automatically stands reinstated. No need for confirmation, just waiting for the Governor to assent to it.”

    The restructuring of the Kano Emirate in 2019 was widely viewed as a political move to reduce the influence of Sanusi II, who was a vocal critic of the then Governor Abdullahi Ganduje’s administration. The creation of new emirates fragmented the power and influence of the traditional Kano Emirate Council.

    Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, the Majority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly and sponsor of the Amendment Bill, informed journalists after Thursday’s session that the bill has been sent to the governor for assent. He stated, “Now there is no longer an active Emir in Kano in all the five Emirates: Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye. The law now allows the governor to call on the traditional kingmakers to choose a new king.

    Thirty U.S. sailors and Marines got injured during a training mishap off North Florida. The accident happened when two Navy landing craft ships collided during a training drill near Jacksonville. Among the injured, five required hospitalization. The incident occurred during a pre-deployment exercise involving the USS Wasp, USS New York, and the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group.

    Despite the collision, both landing craft ships remained afloat and returned to their respective ships. Immediate assistance was provided by a third landing craft ship, transporting all injured personnel back to their ships for medical evaluation. One sailor is still hospitalized in Savannah, Georgia, while others with minor injuries were treated aboard the ships. An investigation is ongoing, with updates to follow from U.S. 2nd Fleet officials.

    The Anambra State Police Command has made significant strides in combating crime by apprehending seven individuals suspected of involvement in cultism and armed robbery.

    In a recent statement to the press, Police Public Relations Officer SP Ikenga Tochukwu revealed that the arrests took place around 10 pm on Friday, following a targeted operation by law enforcement officers. Among the seized items were a cut-size double barrel gun, an unregistered tricycle, and various illicit drugs.

    The arrested individuals, all males, include Chukwuemka Ozoekwe (18), Chidozie Anagor (18), Chukwuemeka Oyeoka (18), Ebuka Okoye (17), Olisa Obi (19), Chidubem Nwakwu (20), and Nwankwo Kosisochukwu. However, two suspects, including a person known as “Baby,” remain at large, prompting a manhunt by the authorities.

    According to SP Ikenga, the police encountered the suspects at UNIZIK Junction during a patrol, leading to a pursuit where Chukwuemka Ozoekwe was successfully apprehended. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of Chidozie Anagor and Chukwuemeka Oyeoka, while efforts to apprehend the remaining fugitives are ongoing.

    During interrogation, the arrested individuals confessed to affiliations with the Vipers Cult group, one of the gangs causing unrest in Awka metropolis. They admitted to planning robberies targeting commuters for their valuables.

    Deputy Commissioner of Police DCP Fidelis Ogarabe emphasized the need for sustained efforts in combating crime and assured the public that law enforcement agencies are dedicated to upholding security. He directed that the suspects be prosecuted once investigations are concluded, reaffirming the commitment to justice.
