Lawan Denies Defection Speculations, Calls It Political Misinformation

Former Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, has categorically denied reports suggesting he is planning to dump the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

In a statement released by his media adviser, Ezrel Tabiowo, on Sunday, Lawan described the reports and posters linking him to the SDP as “entirely false, baseless, and without any merit.” He emphasized that he remains a committed and loyal member of the APC, dismissing the speculation as an attempt by political mischief-makers to create distractions.

“I have been a dedicated member of the APC since its formation, and my loyalty to the party remains unshaken. These rumors are politically motivated and hold no truth,” Lawan stated.

Lawan’s Political Journey: A Testament to His Loyalty

The former Senate President, who represents Yobe North Senatorial District and currently serves as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Defence, took time to highlight his long-standing commitment to the APC.

Lawan recalled his political career, emphasizing that he has never defected from his party affiliations since entering politics over 25 years ago.

  • In 1999, he was elected into the House of Representatives on the platform of the All People’s Party (APP).
  • The APP later evolved into the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP).
  • In 2013, the ANPP merged with other opposition parties to form the APC.
  • Since then, Lawan has remained a key stakeholder in the party, consistently supporting its vision and leadership.

“Unlike many politicians who switch parties for personal gain, I have always remained faithful to my political principles. I believe in the APC’s ideology and will continue to work towards the success of the party at both the state and national levels,” he stated.

Support for Yobe State Governor and President Tinubu’s Administration

Lawan took the opportunity to reaffirm his full support for Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, commending his leadership and dedication to good governance in the state.

“Governor Buni has demonstrated great commitment to the progress of Yobe State, and I stand with him in ensuring the continued development of our people,” he said.

Additionally, he pledged unwavering support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, endorsing the President’s policies and reforms aimed at addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges.

“The current administration is working tirelessly to implement crucial reforms that will drive national development, and I fully support these efforts. It is our collective responsibility as party members and public servants to contribute to the success of this government,” Lawan emphasized.

A Call to Ignore Misinformation and Political Distractions

Addressing the public, APC members, and his supporters, Lawan urged them to disregard the misleading rumors about his alleged defection. He warned that political opponents and mischief-makers were trying to create unnecessary distractions for personal political agendas.
