“Katsina Rescues 13-Year-Old from Trafficking, Vows to Protect Vulnerable Children”

A Young Girl’s Journey to Safety
The Katsina State Government has welcomed 13-year-old Rahama Sanusi, who was rescued from a suspected human trafficker in a joint operation by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the State Ministry of Women Affairs. The rescue highlights the ongoing efforts to combat child trafficking and protect vulnerable children in the state.

The Rescue: A Collaborative Effort
Rahama’s rescue is a testament to the collaboration between government agencies and organizations like UNICEF. The State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Hadiza Yar’adua, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of out-of-school children and implementing alternative care policies tailored to the cultural and religious context of the community.

Rahama had been living in Kano State for seven years under the care of her late mother’s sister before her rescue. Her case sheds light on the challenges faced by children in similar situations and the need for stronger family support systems.

A Call to Action: Parents Must Take Responsibility
Commissioner Yar’adua emphasized the importance of parents taking full responsibility for their children’s welfare. “I am not suggesting that relatives should not help care for our children, but I urge parents, despite the challenges of life, to take a more active role in raising their children,” she said.

She also highlighted the seriousness with which the state is addressing these issues, with strong support from Governor Dikko Radda, the justice system, and partner agencies like NAPTIP. “We will not relent in our efforts,” she added, reaffirming the state’s commitment to protecting underage children from harm.

A Father’s Plea: Never Give Up on Your Children
Rahama’s father, Sanusi Ahmed, shared his emotional journey of trying to bring his daughter home. He revealed that her caregiver had been unwilling to allow her return, despite his repeated attempts. “I appeal to parents to never give up on their children, no matter how difficult life may be,” he said, urging families to prioritize their children’s well-being.

Why This Matters
Rahama’s rescue is a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by children in Nigeria, particularly those separated from their families. It also underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between government agencies, NGOs, and communities to combat trafficking and protect children.

A Step Toward a Safer Future
The Katsina State Government’s efforts to rescue Rahama and implement policies for vulnerable children are commendable. However, her story also serves as a call to action for parents, communities, and policymakers to work together to ensure that no child falls victim to trafficking or neglect.

As Rahama begins her journey to recovery, her case highlights the need for continued vigilance and support to create a safer, more secure future for all children.
