Funke Akindele: “Nobody Made Me a Star – I Did It Myself”

Nollywood powerhouse Funke Akindele has proudly declared herself a self-made star, attributing her phenomenal success in the film industry to her hard work, dedication, and divine grace. The veteran actress and producer made the statement during her keynote address at the Media Independent Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MIPAN) 2025 Media Sales Conference in Lagos.

A Self-Made Success Story
Akindele, who is one of Nollywood’s most celebrated figures, emphasized that her journey to stardom was not handed to her on a silver platter. “Nobody made me a star, only God. I wrote my script, and that was it,” she said, reflecting on her career.

She acknowledged that while she had support along the way, her relentless drive and creativity were the driving forces behind her success. “The first ‘Jenifa’ was released in 2009, and that was the turning point,” she added, referring to the iconic movie that catapulted her to superstardom.

D’banj’s Role in Her Career
While Akindele credited her success to her own efforts, she also gave a nod to Nigerian music star D’banj for his timely advice and support. Recounting a pivotal moment in her career, she shared how D’banj encouraged her to capitalize on the Jenifa brand.

“Amidst the buzz, a club owner reached out to host me at his club, and I met D’banj there. He asked what I was doing with the ‘Jenifa’ brand. I said, ‘I have moved on. I will do another thing.’ He said, ‘No. You have to milk it. It should not go like that. That’s a brand. Go and write another script.’ He gave me some money, and I went back and continued writing,” Akindele revealed.

This advice led to the creation of the Jenifa’s Diary series, which further solidified her status as a Nollywood icon.

From Humble Beginnings to Record-Breaking Success
Funke Akindele’s journey to the top began with her role in the popular sitcom I Need to Know, which aired from 1998 to 2002. However, it was her portrayal of the unforgettable character Jenifa in the 2008 movie of the same name that truly launched her into the limelight.

Since then, Akindele has become a force to be reckoned with in Nollywood, breaking records and setting new standards. She holds the title of the highest-grossing producer in Nigerian cinema, with blockbuster films like Omo Ghetto: The Saga and Battle on Buka Street under her belt.
