The Secretary to the Government of Rivers State (SSG), Tammy Danagogo, has issued a strong warning to political opponents, cautioning them against mistaking Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s calm and peaceful demeanor for weakness.
Danagogo’s statement comes amid increasing criticism of the Fubara administration, particularly from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who has been vocal in his opposition to the governor’s leadership.
In response to Wike’s latest attacks—specifically regarding an invitation letter issued to lawmakers—Danagogo defended his role in the administration and accused critics of misrepresenting the facts.
Danagogo Defends His Role Amid Wike’s Criticism
The controversy began when SSG Danagogo signed a letter inviting lawmakers to a meeting with Governor Fubara. Some opposition figures, including Wike, dismissed the letter as invalid, claiming it overstepped the Secretary’s official duties.
“The letter is useless,” Wike reportedly said, further fueling political tensions in the state.
However, Danagogo quickly responded, clarifying that his actions were well within his official responsibilities. He insisted that his role in drafting and signing the invitation was nothing unusual and aligned with standard governance procedures.
“There is nothing wrong with the SSG writing a letter for an informal meeting,” he told journalists during the commissioning of Okrika Grammar School in Okrika.
The SSG further emphasized that he had carried out similar duties under past administrations, making Wike’s criticism baseless.
Fubara’s Patience in the Face of Political Attacks
Danagogo also took a moment to commend Governor Fubara for his restraint, especially in light of recent political provocations.
One of the most notable incidents was the closure of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex, which prevented the governor from presenting the state budget.
Despite these challenges, Fubara has remained composed, avoiding actions that could escalate political tensions.
Did you know? Political conflicts in Rivers State have historically been among the most heated in Nigeria, often leading to prolonged battles for control within the government.
Danagogo emphasized that Governor Fubara’s calmness should not be mistaken for weakness. Instead, it reflects a leadership style rooted in patience, governance, and stability rather than aggression.
Rivers State Power Struggle: The Bigger Picture
The political friction between Fubara and Wike is part of a larger power struggle within Rivers State.
🔹 Wike, Fubara’s predecessor, played a key role in his emergence as governor but has since clashed with his successor over control of the state’s political structure.
🔹 Fubara, determined to establish his independence, has made governance decisions that have not sat well with his former ally.
🔹 The rift has led to growing tension within the Rivers APC and PDP, with various factions taking sides.
While some political observers believe Wike still holds significant influence in the state, others argue that Fubara is gradually consolidating power and asserting himself as the leader of Rivers politics.
Final Thoughts: Fubara’s Leadership Under Scrutiny
As Rivers State navigates these political tensions, one thing remains clear: Governor Fubara is under the spotlight. His ability to govern effectively amid opposition from political heavyweights will define his leadership moving forward.
For now, SSG Danagogo has made it clear that Fubara will not be intimidated. His message to critics is firm:
“Don’t mistake humility for weakness.”
With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the political landscape in Rivers State is only expected to get more intense. Whether Fubara can maintain control or Wike will regain dominance remains to be seen.
