As Russia intensifies its bombardment of Ukraine, the European Union has issued a stark warning: Vladimir Putin has no intention of pursuing peace. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas condemned the recent wave of devastating attacks, calling for increased military support for Ukraine to prevent further civilian casualties.
Here’s what you need to know about the latest developments in the ongoing conflict.
A Devastating Escalation
Over the weekend, Russia launched a series of relentless drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities, leaving destruction in their wake. One particularly harrowing video captured the moment a central area of Dobropillia was reduced to rubble, with apartment blocks gutted and streets transformed into sprawling ruins.
These attacks come even as talks to potentially end the war are reportedly underway. But Kallas insists that Putin’s actions speak louder than words.
“Russian relentless drone and missile attacks mean that Putin has no peace in mind,” she said.
EU’s Call to Action
Kallas emphasized the urgent need for increased military support to Ukraine, warning that failure to act would result in even greater civilian suffering.
“We must step up our military support. Otherwise, even more Ukrainian civilians will pay the highest price,” she stated.
This call to action comes at a critical time, as Ukraine continues to face significant challenges on the battlefield.
Ukraine’s Struggles and Diplomatic Efforts
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been working tirelessly to shore up international support. Recently, he has sought to repair relations with former U.S. President Donald Trump after a contentious meeting last month.
Zelenskyy has expressed readiness to sign a favourable minerals deal with the U.S., hoping to strengthen ties and secure much-needed resources. However, Ukraine’s efforts are hampered by the U.S. decision to withdraw intelligence sharing and freeze weapons supplies—a move that has left Kyiv vulnerable.
A New Front: North Korean and Russian Troops
Adding to Ukraine’s woes, reports indicate that North Korean and Russian troops have broken through Ukraine’s defences in the Kursk region. For seven months, Ukrainian units had held a parcel of territory in the area, but this latest development marks a significant setback.
The involvement of North Korean troops underscores the growing complexity of the conflict and the widening web of alliances supporting Russia’s aggression.
What’s Next?
As the war drags on, the international community faces mounting pressure to respond. The EU’s condemnation of Putin’s actions highlights the urgent need for a unified approach to support Ukraine and hold Russia accountable.
But with peace talks seemingly going nowhere and attacks intensifying, the road ahead remains fraught with uncertainty. One thing is clear: the world cannot afford to look away.
