“Political Turmoil in Rivers: Two RSIEC Commissioners Resign Amid Uncertainty”

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has been hit by a wave of resignations as two of its commissioners stepped down from their positions. The resignations come amid political uncertainty following the Supreme Court’s nullification of the October 5, 2024, Local Government Elections conducted by the commission.

Who Resigned?
The two commissioners who resigned are:

Professor Simeon Emenike Weli: Commissioner in charge of Political Parties and Monitoring.

Dr. Lazbery Nyebuchi Nnah: Commissioner in charge of Budget, Research, and Statistics.

Both officials submitted their resignation letters to the RSIEC Chairman, Retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, and the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo.

Reasons for Resignation
In their letters, the commissioners cited the current situation within RSIEC and the Supreme Court’s decision to annul the 2024 Local Government Elections as key reasons for their departure. They also referenced ongoing developments within the commission, which they said compelled them to step down.

Despite their resignation, both commissioners expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the growth and development of Rivers State.

Background: Supreme Court Ruling
The Supreme Court’s nullification of the October 5, 2024, Local Government Elections has thrown RSIEC into disarray. The court’s decision has raised questions about the commission’s credibility and the integrity of the electoral process in Rivers State.

In response, RSIEC announced August 9, 2025, as the new date for the state’s local government elections. However, the resignations of two key commissioners have further complicated the situation, casting a shadow over the commission’s ability to conduct free and fair elections.

What’s Next?
The resignations highlight the deepening political crisis in Rivers State and the challenges facing RSIEC as it prepares for the upcoming elections. With two key positions now vacant, the commission must act swiftly to fill these roles and restore public confidence in its operations.

As the state navigates this period of uncertainty, all eyes will be on RSIEC to see how it addresses these challenges and ensures a transparent and credible electoral process.
