Application Deadline for 2023/2024 Closes Soon, New Cycle Opens February 22
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has successfully disbursed over N22 billion in loans to at least 200,000 Nigerian students, marking a significant step in the Federal Government’s efforts to support higher education funding.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Monday, February 17, NELFUND’s Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, confirmed the milestone and provided updates on the ongoing and upcoming application processes.
Key Deadlines for Student Loan Applications
Sawyerr announced that the application window for the 2023/2024 academic session will close on February 21, 2025. However, students who missed the deadline need not worry, as the 2024/2025 application cycle will open the very next day, February 22, 2025.
FG’s Commitment to Student Loans
The Federal Government had earlier approved a N110 billion student loan package in December 2024 for public tertiary institution students across Nigeria. Before that, in November 2024, Sawyerr revealed to the House of Representatives Committee on Student Loans and Higher Education Financing that NELFUND had already disbursed N12 billion in loans to students.
What’s Next for Nigerian Students?
With the expansion of the student loan program, more Nigerian students will have access to much-needed financial support for their education. The upcoming application phase presents another opportunity for eligible students to benefit from the initiative.
