“Osun Govt Relaxes Curfew in Ifon-Ilobu, Orders 24-Hour Security Vigilance Amid Communal Clashes”

The Osun State Government has announced a relaxation of the curfew imposed on the warring communities of Ifon-Orolu and Ilobu, following a gradual return of peace after months of violent communal clashes. The curfew, initially in effect from 7 pm to 7 am, has been adjusted to 10 pm to 4 am, starting from Sunday, March 2, 2025.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the government also directed security agencies to maintain 24-hour surveillance in the affected areas to ensure lasting peace. Here’s the full story.

The Communal Clashes
The conflict between Ifon-Orolu and Ilobu communities erupted earlier this year over land disputes, leading to loss of lives, including that of an undergraduate in Ilobu. The violence prompted Governor Ademola Adeleke to impose a 12-hour curfew on January 16, 2025, to restore order and protect residents.

The clashes have been a source of concern for the state government, which has been working tirelessly to mediate between the warring factions and restore harmony.

Curfew Relaxation and Security Measures
Governor Adeleke expressed satisfaction with the gradual return of peace in the communities, stating that the relaxation of the curfew is a step toward normalcy.

“Though not yet 100% return to peace, Governor Adeleke expressed conviction that it is just a matter of time for total peace to be attained in the communities,” the statement read.

The new curfew hours, from 10 pm to 4 am, will remain in effect until full peace is restored. Additionally, the government has directed security agencies, including the Nigeria Army, Nigeria Police, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to maintain round-the-clock surveillance in the area.

Appeal for Cooperation and Peace
Governor Adeleke urged all stakeholders, including traditional rulers and community leaders, to cooperate with the government in resolving the disputes amicably. He also called on residents to use the ongoing holy month of Ramadan to pray for lasting peace and harmony.

The governor issued a stern warning to anyone attempting to disrupt the peace, stating that such individuals would face the full wrath of the law.

Why This Matters
The relaxation of the curfew is a positive development, signaling progress in the government’s efforts to restore peace. However, the underlying issues fueling the conflict, such as land disputes, must be addressed to prevent future outbreaks of violence.

The government’s decision to maintain 24-hour security vigilance underscores its commitment to protecting lives and property in the affected communities.

What’s Next?
As the curfew is relaxed, the focus will be on sustaining the peace and addressing the root causes of the conflict. The state government’s mediation efforts, coupled with community cooperation, will be crucial in achieving lasting resolution.
