Niger Gov Directs Security Agencies to Ensure Seamless Eid-el-Fitr Celebration

As Muslims in Niger State, Nigeria, and across the world gather to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has directed security agencies to ensure a peaceful, safe, and incident-free celebration across the 25 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.

The governor issued this directive while addressing a large gathering of Muslim faithful at the Minna Central Eid Prayer Ground, where he participated in the two raka’at Eid prayers.

Governor Bago emphasized the need for strict security measures to prevent any potential threats during the Eid festivities, urging law enforcement agencies to remain on high alert and take necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property.

Ensuring a Secure and Peaceful Eid Celebration

Governor Bago, who was represented by his Deputy, Yakubu Garba, stressed that security is a top priority for his administration, particularly during major religious gatherings that attract large crowds.

“Security remains a top priority for this administration, and I urge all security agencies to remain vigilant. We must ensure that our people celebrate Eid in peace, free from any form of violence or disruption.”

He called on the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the military, and other security operatives to enhance their efforts by:

  • Increasing patrols in urban and rural areas to deter criminal activities.

  • Deploying personnel to strategic locations, including Eid prayer grounds, markets, and recreational centers.

  • Ensuring effective intelligence gathering to prevent any security breaches.

  • Collaborating with community vigilante groups to monitor suspicious activities.

The governor urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious movements or individuals who may pose a threat to public safety.

“We must all be vigilant and work together. The government is committed to securing lives and property, but security is a collective responsibility.”

Encouraging Acts of Generosity and Charity

Beyond security, Governor Bago used the occasion to appeal to wealthy individuals in the state to extend acts of generosity to the less privileged, reminding them that Eid-el-Fitr is a time for sharing and selflessness.

“Eid-el-Fitr is not just about feasting and celebration; it is a time for reflection, gratitude, and giving. I urge those who have been blessed with resources to support the needy in our communities, ensuring that no one is left behind in the joy of this occasion.”

He urged philanthropists, religious organizations, and community leaders to donate food, clothing, and other essentials to widows, orphans, and the less fortunate.

Additionally, he called on local businesses to consider offering discounts or free meals to those in need, as a way of fostering community spirit and ensuring that every Muslim in Niger State can celebrate Eid with dignity.

“One of the greatest virtues of Islam is compassion. Let us be our brother’s keeper and share the joy of this celebration with those who are struggling.”

Addressing Youth and Social Conduct

The governor also took the opportunity to address youths, urging them to celebrate responsibly and avoid engaging in criminal activities, violence, or reckless behavior.

“To our youth, I urge you to celebrate responsibly. Do not allow yourselves to be used by misguided individuals to cause trouble. Let this be a time of happiness, reflection, and togetherness.”

He warned against drug abuse, reckless driving, and any acts of hooliganism, stating that security forces have been instructed to deal decisively with troublemakers.

“We will not tolerate any form of lawlessness. Anyone found disrupting the peace will face the full wrath of the law.”

The government, he noted, is committed to creating opportunities for young people, encouraging them to take advantage of government initiatives in education, entrepreneurship, and vocational training rather than resorting to criminal behavior.

Recognizing the Role of Religious and Traditional Leaders

Governor Bago expressed deep appreciation to traditional rulers, religious leaders, and community elders for their continuous efforts in promoting peace and unity in the state.

He acknowledged their role in mediating conflicts, fostering interfaith dialogue, and advocating moral values, and encouraged them to continue guiding the people with wisdom and fairness.

“Our traditional and religious leaders play a crucial role in maintaining peace and guiding the people towards the right path. We deeply appreciate your efforts and encourage you to keep up the good work.”

The governor also called on them to remain steadfast in preaching unity and peaceful coexistence among different ethnic and religious groups in the state.

Special Adviser Reiterates Government’s Commitment to Development

In a related development, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Affairs, Mohammed Nma Kolo, reassured the people of Niger State that the government remains fully committed to development projects across the state.

He emphasized that Governor Bago’s New Niger Agenda is focused on:

Improving infrastructure and roads
Enhancing healthcare and education services
Boosting agricultural productivity

Creating economic opportunities for youths and women

He urged residents to support the government’s vision by being law-abiding, hardworking, and actively participating in community development efforts.
