Professor Abdullahi Sale Expresses Deep Sorrow Over Tragic Incident
The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Professor Abdullahi Sale, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic and brutal killing of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State. He described the attack as a senseless act of violence that should never be tolerated in a civilized society.
In a heartfelt condolence message, Professor Sale extended his sympathies to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the families of the victims, and the entire Nigerian populace. He emphasized the need for national unity, peace, and tolerance, stressing that Nigeria can only progress when citizens see one another as brothers and sisters, regardless of ethnic, religious, or regional differences.
“I was deeply saddened to hear the report of the horrific killing of 16 travelers by a mob in the Undune Efandion Community of Uromi, Edo State. This is a tragic loss, not just for their families but for the entire nation. It is heartbreaking that innocent lives were taken in such a brutal manner,” he said.
Professor Sale called for an end to all forms of mob justice, warning that such actions only breed further hatred, division, and instability in the country.
Commending President Tinubu’s Swift Action
The NAHCON chairman commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his immediate and decisive response in ordering security agencies to launch a manhunt and ensure the perpetrators face justice.
“At this critical moment, it is important that we see swift action from our leaders, and I must commend President Tinubu for his strong and immediate response. His directive to security agencies to ensure the swift arrest of the perpetrators is a clear demonstration of his commitment to justice and national security,” he stated.
Professor Sale further noted that as of March 29, 2025, reports confirmed that 14 suspects had already been apprehended in connection to the incident. He urged the authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others who may consider taking the law into their own hands.
He encouraged citizens to trust the judicial system, emphasizing that resorting to mob actions only leads to chaos and more suffering for innocent people.
“We cannot allow ourselves to live in a society where people take the law into their own hands. This is why we must encourage the proper judicial process. Justice must be served for the families of the victims, and such heinous acts must never happen again,” he added.
Prayers for the Victims and Their Families
In his condolence message, Professor Sale prayed for the souls of the deceased, asking Allah to grant them Jannatul Firdaus (Paradise) and to give their families the strength and comfort to bear the tragic loss.
“In this blessed month of Ramadan, we pray for Allah’s mercy upon the souls of the victims. May He grant them Jannatul Firdaus and give their families the patience and strength to cope with this painful tragedy,” he said.
NAHCON Reaffirms Commitment to a Smooth 2025 Hajj
Despite the tragic incident, the NAHCON chairman reassured Nigerians that the commission remains fully committed to ensuring a smooth and successful Hajj operation in 2025.
He revealed that NAHCON had recently completed an assessment of Hajj service providers in Saudi Arabia, adding that logistical and operational plans were being put in place to ensure a hitch-free pilgrimage for Nigerian pilgrims.
“We are leaving no stone unturned in our preparations for Hajj 2025. Our visit to Saudi Arabia allowed us to assess the preparedness of service providers, and I can assure our pilgrims that they will receive top-notch services throughout their stay in the Holy Land,” he said.
Professor Sale also praised Vice President Kashim Shettima for his unwavering support and guidance towards the success of NAHCON’s mission.
“I must extend my gratitude to Vice President Shettima for his continuous support. His leadership has been instrumental in helping us navigate challenges and ensure the success of Hajj operations,” he added.
Call for Peace and Reflection Ahead of Eid-el-Fitr
As the holy month of Ramadan draws to a close, Professor Sale encouraged Nigerians to use the upcoming Eid-el-Fitr celebrations as an opportunity for self-reflection, peace, and unity.
He urged citizens to embrace the values of love, tolerance, and sacrifice, reminding them that Islam teaches peace and kindness towards others.
“As we approach Eid-el-Fitr, I call on Nigerians to let the spirit of Ramadan guide our actions. Let us come together, regardless of our differences, and show love and support to one another. May Allah bless our nation and continue to guide our leaders towards justice, prosperity, and national peace,” he concluded.
