Convictions Follow Destruction of Transformer and Telecom Mast

In a landmark ruling, a Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, has convicted two individuals for their roles in vandalizing vital infrastructure. The convicts, Abdullahi Umar and Yakubu Mohammed, were sentenced to prison terms for damaging a transformer and a telecommunication mast, respectively.

Abdullahi Umar’s Sentence

In Suit Number FHC/LKJ/06c/2025, Abdullahi Umar was found guilty of vandalizing a transformer cable that powered the Federal University Lokoja and surrounding communities in Adankolo. The court sentenced him to two years and six months in prison for his actions, which severely disrupted the electricity supply to local residents.

Yakubu Mohammed’s Sentence

In a separate case, Yakubu Mohammed was convicted in Suit Number FHC/LKJ/05c/2025 for vandalizing a telecommunication mast antenna in the Okumi Community of Lokoja. He received a one year and six months sentence for his involvement in the act of damaging critical national communication infrastructure.

NSCDC’s Role in the Case

The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kogi, DSC Aliyu Abdullahi, confirmed the convictions, highlighting the NSCDC’s role in securing these outcomes. Commandant Akinlade Esther commended the prosecution team, led by DCC Ike F. Ugochukwu, for their effective handling of the cases.

In a statement, Commandant Akinlade expressed her commitment to reducing vandalism of critical national assets and infrastructure and emphasized the importance of public collaboration in combating lawlessness across the state. She urged the citizens of Kogi State to come forward with credible information that could help the NSCDC in tackling criminal activities.
