“I’ll Never Stop Speaking Up Against Oppression, Bad Governance” – Mr Macaroni

Popular Actor and Activist Reaffirms Commitment to Social Justice

Renowned Nigerian actor, comedian, and social activist, Adebowale Adedayo, popularly known as Mr Macaroni, has reaffirmed his commitment to speaking out against oppression, injustice, and bad governance in Nigeria.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) handle, the outspoken entertainer emphasized that he has always championed the cause of social justice, even before gaining widespread fame.

Macaroni’s Strong Stance on Social Issues

In his post, Mr Macaroni wrote:

“I would never stop speaking up against the oppression of the people and against bad governance. That is what I have always stood against, even before fame. But please do not hold other celebrities to the same standard, especially when the people themselves are not accountable.”

This statement comes amid ongoing conversations about the role of Nigerian celebrities in advocating for social change, with many citizens calling for more public figures to use their platforms to demand good governance and accountability from leaders.

A History of Advocacy and Activism

Mr Macaroni has been an active voice in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape, using his platform to challenge government excesses and highlight issues affecting everyday Nigerians.

His activism became particularly prominent during the #EndSARS protests in October 2020, where he played a significant role in mobilizing young Nigerians against police brutality. He was among the activists arrested and brutalized by security operatives during the infamous Lekki Toll Gate demonstration in February 2021.

Since then, he has remained vocal about human rights violations, corruption, police misconduct, and the need for responsible governance.

Urging Citizens to Be Accountable

While Mr Macaroni remains firm in his activism, he also cautioned Nigerians against expecting all celebrities to be as outspoken as he is. He pointed out that demanding change from public figures alone is insufficient if ordinary citizens fail to hold themselves and their leaders accountable.

“We need to understand that true change begins with every individual. While some of us will always speak up, the real power lies with the people. If the citizens themselves remain indifferent, expecting celebrities to do all the work, we may not achieve the desired change.”

Mixed Reactions from Nigerians

Following his statement, social media users expressed diverse opinions on the role of celebrities in advocating for national change.

Some applauded him for his bravery and consistency, urging other influential figures to follow suit. Others, however, argued that celebrity activism alone cannot drive systemic reform without widespread citizen participation.

A Twitter user, @Tolu_Ben, commented:

“Macaroni has been one of the few celebrities who truly stand with the people. We appreciate your voice, brother! But we need more people like you to speak out!”

Another user, @MaryJude1993, had a different view:

“Nigerians always want celebrities to fight for them while they stay silent. Why can’t we all demand accountability together? Celebrities are not our saviors!”

The Role of Celebrities in Politics and Governance

In Nigeria, celebrities are often expected to use their influence to drive social change. Figures like Femi Kuti, Seun Kuti, Falz, Burna Boy, and Tacha Akide have spoken out against various issues, including corruption, youth unemployment, and human rights violations.

However, some entertainers choose to remain neutral, focusing on their careers rather than political activism. This has led to criticism from some Nigerians, who believe that public figures have a responsibility to speak out on national matters.

What’s Next for Mr Macaroni?

Despite the backlash that often comes with being outspoken, Mr Macaroni remains resolute in his commitment to advocating for justice. He has continued using his comedy skits, social media presence, and public engagements to highlight pressing issues and encourage Nigerian youth to be politically conscious.

As the country gears up for the 2027 general elections, many believe that voices like his will be crucial in mobilizing young voters and holding leaders accountable.

For now, Mr Macaroni’s message is clear: he will not stop speaking up, and neither should the people.
