Farewell to a Legend: President Tinubu Pays Tribute to Pa Ayo Adebanjo

A Nation Mourns a Titan of Democracy
Nigeria has lost a monumental figure in its political history. President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, recognizing his decades-long fight for justice, democracy, and national unity.

A Peaceful Transition at 96
Pa Ayo Adebanjo passed away peacefully at his home in Lekki, Lagos, on Friday, February 14, 2025. His family confirmed the news, marking the end of an era for a man whose contributions helped shape modern Nigeria.

A Life Dedicated to Justice and Democracy
In his heartfelt tribute, President Tinubu described Adebanjo as a steadfast and principled leader whose wisdom and commitment to democracy resonated throughout his lifetime.

“As a nation, we will miss his regular interventions in national affairs, which enriched our political discourse,” Tinubu stated. “Though we mourn his departure, we are also grateful to God for blessing him with a long, remarkable, and purposeful life—96 years of unrelenting advocacy for progress and equity.”

A Pillar in Nigeria’s Political Evolution
Pa Ayo Adebanjo was among the last surviving nationalists who played a vital role in shaping Nigeria’s foundation. A devoted disciple of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, his influence spanned multiple political eras.

From serving as the Organizing Secretary of the Action Group in the First Republic to leading the Unity Party of Nigeria in the Second Republic, Adebanjo’s contributions to Nigerian politics were immense.

A Voice Against Oppression
During Nigeria’s darkest political moments, Pa Adebanjo stood firm. Following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, he joined the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), emerging as a strong voice against military dictatorship. His advocacy played a crucial role in the country’s return to democracy.

A Mentor and Father Figure
President Tinubu acknowledged Adebanjo’s personal impact on his journey. “His unwavering commitment to truth and justice extended to my governorship candidacy in 1999. Baba Adebanjo’s steadfast support was instrumental in my election as Governor of Lagos State.”

Even though their political paths diverged over the years, Tinubu emphasized that his admiration and respect for Adebanjo never wavered. “Until his death, I shared a deep personal bond with Baba Adebanjo; he was like a father figure.”

A Legacy That Lives On
The President extended his condolences to Adebanjo’s family, the Afenifere community, and all Nigerians who shared his vision. He urged the nation to take solace in the enduring legacy of a man who dedicated his life to service.

“May the soul of this great patriot find eternal rest, and may his ideals, which he so passionately envisioned, forever resonate in our country,” Tinubu concluded.
