As Muslims around the world celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has extended warm greetings to the Muslim Ummah, urging them to continue practicing the values of unity, compassion, and tolerance learned during the holy month of Ramadan.
Eid-el-Fitr is a momentous occasion that marks the end of the Ramadan fast, a period of intense devotion, reflection, and acts of charity. Throughout the month, Muslims engage in prayers, fasting from dawn to dusk, and acts of kindness, embodying the spirit of self-discipline and generosity.
The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), under the leadership of its President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, confirmed that the first day of Shawwal falls on Sunday, March 30, marking the conclusion of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid.
A Call to Sustain the Spirit of Ramadan
In a statement issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Senator Barau congratulated Muslims and encouraged them to carry forward the values of Ramadan beyond the celebration of Eid.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to my fellow Muslims across Nigeria and all over the world as we celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, marking the end of the sacred month of Ramadan. May Almighty Allah accept our prayers, supplications, and good deeds, and may this season bring blessings, peace, and prosperity to our beloved nation.”
The senator emphasized that Ramadan is not just a month of fasting but a time of spiritual renewal and moral refinement, and the lessons learned should be practiced daily to promote harmony, patience, and selflessness.
“Let us remember that the virtues of love, patience, charity, and self-discipline instilled in us during Ramadan should not be left behind as we celebrate Eid. Instead, they should guide our actions in our personal lives, in our communities, and in our country at large.”
He further called on Muslims to continue acts of charity and kindness, particularly towards the less privileged, stressing that helping others should not be limited to Ramadan but should be a lifelong practice.
A Message of National Unity and Development
Senator Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, emphasized the importance of national unity and peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians, regardless of religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation.
“Nigeria is a nation blessed with diversity, and our strength lies in our unity. Regardless of our differences, we must embrace peace, practice tolerance, and work together for the greater good of our nation.“
He encouraged Nigerians to remain steadfast in their prayers for the country’s progress and to offer their unwavering support to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is making efforts to address the nation’s economic and security challenges.
“Let us support our leaders with prayers and positive contributions. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is committed to addressing the challenges facing our country, and we must stand united to ensure the success of ongoing reforms and developmental projects.”
Regional Development and Legislative Commitment
As part of his dedication to national development, Senator Barau highlighted the establishment of five regional development commissions, which aim to accelerate economic growth, improve security, and foster infrastructural advancements across Nigeria.
These commissions, recently signed into law by President Tinubu, will focus on the development of the following regions:
✅ North West Development Commission
✅ North Central Development Commission
✅ South East Development Commission
✅ South West Development Commission
✅ South-South Development Commission
Senator Barau, who personally sponsored the bill for the North West Development Commission, expressed confidence that these initiatives will play a crucial role in addressing developmental challenges and enhancing the standard of living for Nigerians.
“With the establishment of regional development commissions, we are taking a giant leap forward in ensuring that every part of Nigeria experiences equitable progress and development. These commissions will tackle regional disparities, create job opportunities, and address pressing economic and infrastructural issues.”
He reaffirmed the commitment of the National Assembly to enacting policies that support sustainable development, assuring Nigerians that their voices and concerns remain a priority in legislative decisions.
Promoting Peace and Religious Tolerance
Senator Barau strongly advocated for religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence, calling on leaders, religious figures, and citizens to reject violence and extremism.
“Eid-el-Fitr is a time for celebration, reflection, and gratitude, but it is also a time to renew our commitment to peace and national unity. Let us set aside differences, avoid hate speech, and promote harmony among people of all faiths and backgrounds.”
He urged Muslims to continue fostering interfaith dialogue and understanding, ensuring that Nigeria remains a nation where diverse religions and cultures co-exist in peace and mutual respect.
“The strength of our country lies in our ability to coexist peacefully and respect one another’s beliefs. Let us use this season to build bridges of understanding and compassion, ensuring that Nigeria thrives as a united and prosperous nation.”

Encouragement for the Less Privileged
In his message, Senator Barau also emphasized the importance of supporting the poor and vulnerable in society, urging wealthy individuals, businesses, and organizations to assist those in need.
“As we celebrate, let us remember those who are struggling to make ends meet. The true essence of Eid lies in giving, sharing, and showing compassion to those who are less fortunate. Let us reach out to widows, orphans, and those in need, extending our hands in love and generosity.”
He called on well-meaning Nigerians to contribute to humanitarian efforts, as doing so will help alleviate suffering and strengthen social bonds.
