Eid-el-Fitr: Northern CAN Celebrates with Muslims, Condemns Edo Killings

As Muslims in Nigeria and around the world celebrate the joyous occasion of Eid-el-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has extended heartfelt greetings to the Muslim community.

In a statement released on Sunday, Rev. John Joseph Hayab (Chairman) and Bishop Mohammed Naga (Secretary) of Northern CAN emphasized the spiritual significance of Ramadan, acknowledging the dedication, prayers, fasting, and acts of charity observed during the holy month.

However, amid the celebrations, CAN also expressed deep sorrow over the tragic killing of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State, condemning the heinous act of violence while calling for justice, restraint, and national unity.

Northern CAN Emphasizes the Importance of Eid-el-Fitr and Ramadan

CAN highlighted that Ramadan is a period of spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and renewal. The Eid-el-Fitr celebration, which follows a month of fasting, devotion, and charity, is a time of thanksgiving, forgiveness, and strengthening community bonds.

In the statement, CAN noted that the teachings of Islam and Christianity both emphasize peace, love, and respect for one another, urging Nigerians of all faiths to embrace the values of harmony and tolerance.

“Eid-el-Fitr is a period of joy and gratitude, where families come together to celebrate the blessings of Allah. We pray that this season fosters stronger unity and understanding among Nigerians, regardless of religious background.”

CAN praised the Muslim community for their commitment to prayer, generosity, and discipline during Ramadan and called on all Nigerians to apply these principles in their daily lives to foster a more peaceful and just society.

CAN Mourns the Edo Killings: “A Tragic Loss for All Nigerians”

While extending Eid-el-Fitr greetings, CAN also expressed profound grief over the senseless killing of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State, acknowledging the unbearable pain and anguish that their families must be going through.

“The pain and anguish their families and loved ones must endure are unimaginable, and we can only pray that God grants them comfort, strength, and solace during this darkest of times.”

Describing the attack as a stain on our collective humanity, CAN vehemently condemned the brutal killing of innocent people, calling it a tragedy that should unite Nigerians in outrage and determination to seek justice.

“Violence against innocent citizens is an attack on our shared humanity. This gruesome act should not only be condemned but must also serve as a wake-up call for our leaders to take stronger action against insecurity.”

CAN emphasized that Nigeria cannot afford to normalize such violence, urging political leaders, security agencies, and civil society to work together in eradicating the root causes of violent crimes in the country.

CAN Calls for Restraint: “Revenge is Not the Answer”

In light of the growing outrage over the Edo killings, CAN urged Nigerians to resist the temptation to seek revenge, warning that retaliation would only lead to further chaos, destruction, and division.

“We understand the pain and anger felt by those affected by this tragedy. However, revenge is never a solution—it only perpetuates cycles of violence. We urge those calling for counter-reactions to reconsider their stance and allow justice to take its course.”

CAN also cautioned against dangerous stereotypes and generalizations, stating that blaming an entire ethnic or religious group for the actions of a few individuals only fuels division and hatred.

“The tendency to generalize and demonize entire communities based on the actions of a few is a dangerous path that must be rejected. We must not allow ourselves to be divided by religious, ethnic, or regional sentiments.”

Instead, CAN called on Nigerians to embrace a spirit of unity, emphasizing that the country can only move forward when citizens rise above hatred and prejudice.

Security Agencies and Government Must Act Swiftly

CAN demanded immediate action from the Edo State Government, the Federal Government, and security agencies, urging them to conduct a thorough investigation into the killings and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“It is crucial that the authorities take swift, transparent, and decisive action to ensure that those responsible for this heinous crime are held accountable. Failure to act will only embolden criminals and deepen public distrust.”

The Christian body also stressed the importance of strengthening Nigeria’s security infrastructure, pointing out that persistent violent attacks across the country indicate gaps in intelligence gathering, law enforcement, and conflict prevention strategies.

CAN called for a more proactive approach in tackling security challenges, including better coordination among security agencies, community policing, and enhanced intelligence operations to prevent future attacks.

“Nigeria must not remain a country where innocent lives are taken without consequences. We need bold leadership, stronger policies, and a united front against insecurity.”

A Call for Peace, Unity, and Hope

Despite the pain and grief surrounding the Edo killings, CAN expressed hope that Nigeria can rise above its challenges through peace, justice, and collective responsibility.

The message of Eid-el-Fitr—which signifies renewal, gratitude, and reconciliation—serves as an opportunity for Nigerians of all faiths to recommit to the principles of peace, tolerance, and brotherhood.

CAN urged religious leaders, traditional rulers, and all citizens to reject violence and embrace dialogue, emphasizing that only a united Nigeria can overcome its challenges.

“As we celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, let us reflect on how we can contribute to a more peaceful Nigeria. Let us foster relationships based on love, understanding, and mutual respect. Together, we can build a nation where justice prevails, and all citizens feel safe and valued.”

Final Thoughts: A Defining Moment for Nigeria

The events surrounding Eid-el-Fitr and the Edo killings highlight the urgent need for national unity, stronger security measures, and unwavering commitment to peace.

CAN’s message is not only a call for justice but also a reminder of the shared humanity that binds all Nigerians. As the country navigates its challenges, the leadership of religious organizations, government institutions, and civil society will play a crucial role in shaping a more secure and peaceful future.

This moment serves as a test of Nigeria’s resilience—one that demands wisdom, patience, and unwavering dedication to the common good.

“Nigeria must rise beyond divisions and embrace a future where peace and unity define our national identity.”
