A Bold Scheme Unraveled
Two drug traffickers who attempted to smuggle a massive consignment of cannabis using vehicles with fake presidency number plates have been sentenced to 35 years in prison each. The culprits, Shuaibu Nuhu Isa, 55, and Zidon Zurga, 50, were arrested in November 2024 near the Numan Bridge in Adamawa State. Their elaborate plan to evade security checks by using counterfeit government plates ultimately failed, leading to their conviction on March 7, 2025.
The Illicit Operation Exposed
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in collaboration with military operatives, intercepted the traffickers’ vehicles—a Toyota Hilux and a Prado SUV—carrying 626 blocks of cannabis weighing 500.8kg. The drugs were hidden in tinted vehicles bearing fake presidency plates (Lagos NT 829 AAA and 01B-266 FG), intended to deceive security personnel.
The illegal consignment was en route from Ondo State to Mubi, Adamawa State, when the suspects were apprehended. The vehicles and the illicit drugs were seized, marking a significant victory in the fight against drug trafficking.
Justice Served
After a thorough trial, Justice Bala Usman of the Federal High Court in Yola convicted the traffickers and handed down a 35-year prison sentence to each. The court also ordered the forfeiture of the two vehicles used in the operation.
Governor Fintiri Applauds NDLEA
Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri commended the NDLEA and security agencies for their relentless efforts to combat drug trafficking and make the state drug-free. He also urged individuals struggling with drug addiction to seek help and contribute positively to society.
“This conviction is a testament to the commitment of our security agencies to rid Adamawa of illegal drugs. We encourage those battling addiction to embrace a better future,” the governor stated.
A Warning to Traffickers
This case serves as a stark warning to drug traffickers attempting to exploit loopholes in the system. The NDLEA’s vigilance and collaboration with other security agencies have once again proven effective in disrupting illegal drug operations and bringing perpetrators to justice.
Why This Matters
The conviction of these traffickers highlights the ongoing battle against drug-related crimes in Nigeria. It also underscores the importance of inter-agency collaboration and the need for continued public awareness about the dangers of drug trafficking and addiction.
