Courtois: A Calm Presence in Goal

The Real Madrid goalkeeper made this revelation during an interview with Rio Ferdinand, who likened him to Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar for his composed aura.

“That’s nice to hear. In that way, I’m a calm goalkeeper, you will not see me shout,” Courtois said.

Unlike many goalkeepers who yell at defenders after mistakes, Courtois believes that communicating effectively is more productive than reacting emotionally.

“If you make a mistake, you already know you’ve made a mistake. It’s better to focus on the set piece straight away, organize your people properly, and when the ball comes into your box, say: ‘Hey, don’t do this anymore or try to do this.’”

“But shouting, waving your arms around—I don’t think it’s necessary.”

Courtois’ Legacy in Goalkeeping
Since his £35 million move from Chelsea to Real Madrid in 2018, Courtois has been a key figure for the Spanish giants. With 107 clean sheets in 267 appearances, his calm and collected approach has helped Real Madrid in numerous high-pressure situations.

Van der Sar Comparison: A Well-Deserved Compliment
Edwin van der Sar, who played for Manchester United from 2005 to 2011, was also known for his composed and tactical goalkeeping style, keeping 135 clean sheets in 266 appearances for the Red Devils.

Being compared to a legend like Van der Sar is high praise, and Courtois’ response shows his intelligent approach to leadership on the field.
