Nigerian Afrobeats sensation, Ayra Starr (real name Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe), has revealed how her early years as a chorister influenced her journey to stardom.
Speaking in a recent interview with Amazing Jazzy, the singer shared that she started singing at the age of 10 and was a lead vocalist in her church’s children’s choir.
How the Choir Influenced Her Music
According to the “Rush” hitmaker:
Singing in the children’s choir was her first experience with music.
She was one of the loudest singers, which helped her gain confidence.
The choir played a major role in shaping her vocal style and artistry.
“I loved being in the choir. I was like the loudest child—it was the kids’ choir, and everybody was little. It was the first time I discovered that I could sing. It really helped me shape my voice and music,” Ayra Starr recounted.
From Choir to Global Stardom
Since making her debut under Mavin Records, Ayra Starr has become one of Nigeria’s biggest music exports, with multiple chart-topping songs and international recognition. Her unique blend of Afrobeats, R&B, and pop continues to set her apart in the music industry.
