A Political Shift in Nigeria
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has attributed the ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the “inordinate ambitions” of its politicians and a lack of proper coordination. This statement was made by Senator Ajibola Bashir, the APC National Secretary, during the formal reception of Hon. Nicholas Ossai, a former PDP member, at the APC national secretariat in Abuja.
Bashir’s remarks highlight the deepening divisions within the PDP and the APC’s confidence in its own stability and growth.
APC’s Critique of the PDP
Senator Bashir described the PDP as a “dilapidated structure” that can no longer be trusted to govern Nigeria. He emphasized that the APC remains the only political party in Nigeria that continues to grow stronger, while opposition parties, particularly the PDP, are plagued by internal crises.
“Of all political parties in Nigeria, our party continues to wax stronger, and you see opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party, are in serious crisis occasioned by inordinate ambitions and lack of proper coordination,” Bashir said.
He questioned the PDP’s ability to lead the country, stating, “Can Nigerians trust a party that cannot even put its house in order to rule the country?”
Ossai’s Defection: A Blow to the PDP
Hon. Nicholas Ossai, who represented Ndokwa East/Ndokwa West/Ukwuani federal constituency in Delta State under the PDP, officially defected to the APC, citing the PDP’s inability to resolve its internal conflicts.
“The umbrella has broken, the center cannot hold. You don’t play party politics when the head is sick. So, I have come to be part of the teamwork of APC that is already shaping Nigeria,” Ossai said.
He expressed his commitment to strengthening the APC at the grassroots level, with the goal of helping the party take over Delta State in the 2027 elections.
Ossai’s Plans for the APC
Ossai outlined his plans to contribute to the APC’s growth, stating:
He will work to ensure the APC takes over the Delta State House of Assembly.
He aims to help the APC win his former federal constituency, where he served for 12 years.
His defection is seen as a significant boost for the APC in Delta State, a region traditionally dominated by the PDP.
A Weakened PDP and a Strengthened APC
The APC’s critique of the PDP and the defection of Hon. Nicholas Ossai underscore the growing challenges facing Nigeria’s main opposition party. As the PDP struggles to resolve its internal conflicts, the APC continues to position itself as the dominant political force in the country.
With the 2027 elections on the horizon, the APC’s ability to attract defectors and maintain its unity will be crucial in its quest to retain power at both the state and federal levels.
