“Osun LG Crisis: Gov Adeleke Begins Statewide Consultations, Visits Bisi Akande”

A Bid for Peace and Dialogue
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has initiated a statewide consultation with key stakeholders to address the ongoing crisis surrounding local government leadership in the state. The governor’s efforts began with a visit to elder statesman and former Osun State Governor, Chief Bisi Akande, at his Ibadan residence. This move signals Adeleke’s commitment to resolving the issue through dialogue and the rule of law.

The Meeting with Bisi Akande
Governor Adeleke, accompanied by top state officials, met with Chief Bisi Akande on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, to discuss the local government crisis and other pressing state and national issues. During the meeting, Adeleke outlined his administration’s stance on the legal controversies surrounding the local government leadership and reiterated his commitment to resolving the matter through lawful means.

“There is a need for all stakeholders to avoid resorting to self-help to prevent further loss of lives and property,” Adeleke stated. He also called on all parties to return to court to present their viewpoints, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law.

Adeleke’s Statewide Consultation Plan
The meeting with Chief Akande marks the beginning of a broader consultation effort by Governor Adeleke. He is scheduled to meet with the State Council of Traditional Rulers on Thursday to provide updates on the situation and seek their support in fostering peace and stability.

Adeleke’s Message: Unity and Respect for the Rule of Law
During the visit, Governor Adeleke expressed his admiration for Chief Akande’s role in fostering consensus and stabilizing national leadership. He also conveyed the Osun State Government’s support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, highlighting the strong partnership between the state and federal governments.

“Our father, we are here to pay homage to you as my predecessor and as an elder statesman. I am also going around to brief our leaders on recent developments in our dear state. Your relationship with the Adeleke family dates back to my late father. I chose to start this consultation with this visit,” Adeleke said.

Chief Akande’s Response
In his response, Chief Akande commended Governor Adeleke for the visit, describing it as a welcome development despite their political differences. He urged all parties to uphold peace and the rule of law, emphasizing that bloodshed in the name of politics is unacceptable.

Osun APC Reacts: Criticism and Calls for Justice
The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) criticized Governor Adeleke’s visit, accusing him of seeking a “soft landing” after the recent violence that led to the death of Remi Abass, a reinstated APC local government chairman.

In a statement, the APC urged Adeleke to approach the Supreme Court for redress if he believes in his case, rather than engaging in what they described as “under-the-table arrangements.” The party also called on the governor to collaborate with the reinstated council chairmen to ensure the dividends of democracy reach all parts of the state.

What’s Next?
Governor Adeleke’s consultation efforts are a step toward resolving the local government crisis, but the road ahead remains challenging. With tensions still high, the governor’s ability to foster dialogue and uphold the rule of law will be critical in restoring peace and stability in Osun State.
