“Inferno on Wheels: Tragic Bus Fire Claims Four Lives in Jigawa State”

A routine journey turned into a nightmare in Gwaram, Jigawa State, as a horrific bus fire claimed four lives and left ten others injured. The incident, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, has left the community in shock and raised urgent questions about road safety.

What Happened?
The tragedy unfolded around 4:00 PM near Government Girls Unity Secondary School in Gwaram. A white Hummer bus, registered as ZAK 382 XA, was en route from Zaki LGA in Bauchi State to Rabadi village in Gwaram LGA. The bus was carrying 44 passengers—25 adults and 19 children—when disaster struck.

According to SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the spokesman for the Jigawa State Police Command, the fire erupted after the vehicle’s exhaust made contact with a mattress tied to the back of the bus. The flames spread rapidly, engulfing the vehicle and trapping passengers inside.

The Human Cost
Four passengers lost their lives in the blaze, their bodies burned beyond recognition. They were identified as Zuwairah Hassan, Fatima Hassan, Iyatale Hassan, and Halima Muhammad, all from Saldiga village in Zaki LGA, Bauchi State.

Ten others sustained injuries and were rushed to Gwaram Cottage Hospital for treatment. Thankfully, the remaining passengers were rescued safely, but the emotional scars of the incident will linger for years to come.

A Call for Action
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Jigawa State Police Command issued a stark warning to motorists, especially commercial drivers. They emphasized the importance of avoiding overloading, adhering to speed limits, and conducting regular vehicle inspections.

“This heartbreaking incident could have been prevented,” SP Shiisu stated. “We urge all drivers to prioritize safety and ensure their vehicles are in proper condition before hitting the road.”

Lessons from the Tragedy
This devastating event serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of neglecting vehicle maintenance and overloading. It also highlights the need for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations to protect lives.

As the community mourns the loss of four souls, the incident underscores the importance of collective responsibility—from drivers to passengers to regulatory authorities—to prevent such tragedies in the future.
