A Major Milestone for the Police Force
In a significant move to strengthen leadership within the Nigerian Police Force, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of 19 high-ranking officers. Three Commissioners of Police (CPs) have been elevated to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs), while 16 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) have been promoted to substantive Commissioners of Police. This decision was announced on February 19, 2025, marking a new chapter for the force.
Meet the Newly Promoted Officers
Among the 16 DCPs promoted to CPs is Audu Baba Umaru, who was promoted and retired on the same day. Other notable names include Cyriacus Enechukwu, Gombit Kopshella Bangs, Eloho Edwin Okpoziakpo, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, Rosemary Okpoho Akpan, Umar Hassan Kabir, and Usman Kanfani Jibrin. These officers have proven their mettle through rigorous assessments, including written exams and oral interviews, to earn their new ranks.
A Rigorous Promotion Process
The promotions were finalized during an extraordinary meeting of the Commission, presided over by DIG Hashimu Argungu, the PSC Chairman. The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including Hon. Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, a retired Supreme Court Justice representing the Judiciary, DIG Taiwo Lakanu representing the Police, and Chief Onyemuchi Nnamani, the Commission’s Secretary. The promotion process was thorough, ensuring that only the most qualified officers were elevated to these prestigious positions.
A Stern Warning from the PSC Chairman
During the interactive session with the newly promoted officers, DIG Hashimu Argungu issued a strong warning. He urged them to steer clear of civil matters such as land disputes, marital issues, and debt collection. “These matters should be left to the courts,” he emphasized. The Chairman made it clear that any officer caught meddling in such affairs would face severe consequences. He also reassured the officers of the Commission’s unwavering support and commitment to their professional growth.
What This Means for the Police Force
These promotions are not just a recognition of individual achievements but also a step toward enhancing the effectiveness of the Nigerian Police Force. With new leadership in place, the force is expected to tackle challenges more efficiently and maintain public trust. The PSC’s emphasis on professionalism and adherence to the rule of law sets a positive tone for the future.
