Drama in Lagos Assembly: Ousted Speaker Obasa Takes Legal Battle to Court

Former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has taken a bold step to challenge his impeachment, filing a lawsuit against the Assembly and his successor, Mojisola Meranda. The legal battle, set to unfold at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, questions the legitimacy of his removal while the House was on recess.

Impeached While Away—Obasa Fights Back
Obasa was removed from office on January 13, 2025, by 36 out of 40 lawmakers while he was out of the country. His replacement, Mojisola Meranda, made history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos Assembly. However, Obasa is not backing down.

Through his lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu, SAN, the former Speaker is asking the court to declare his removal unlawful and unconstitutional. His legal argument centers on the claim that the Assembly cannot legally convene and impeach a Speaker without a formal recall from recess.

Legal Demands: Obasa Wants a Speedy Trial
In his application dated February 12, 2025, Obasa is requesting:

An accelerated hearing to ensure a quick resolution.
A seven-day response limit for the defendants (Lagos Assembly and Meranda) to file their defense.
A three-day deadline for him to file replies on points of law.
He argues that this case is of public interest and must be swiftly addressed to prevent disruptions in the legislative process.

“My Impeachment Was a Setup” – Obasa Alleges Political Conspiracy
Obasa claims that his impeachment was politically motivated and orchestrated while he was away. He also accused the Lagos State Commissioner of Police of aiding the process by sending security agents to lock down his homes in Agege and Ikeja and surround the Assembly complex with over 200 officers.

Despite these allegations, the Lagos Assembly has maintained that his removal was based on misconduct and other offenses, with over two-thirds of lawmakers voting in favor.

What Happens Next?
While the court has yet to fix a hearing date, this legal battle could reshape the political landscape of Lagos. If Obasa succeeds, it might set a precedent for legislative procedures and the limits of power within the House. If he fails, it could cement Meranda’s position and further sideline his influence.

With tensions rising, all eyes are on the court’s decision. Will Obasa reclaim his seat, or is this the end of his reign in the Lagos Assembly?
