“Retirement is a New Beginning: HCSF Walson-Jack Empowers Nigerian Workers for Life After Service”

A Seamless Transition into Retirement
On February 21, 2025, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, reassured Nigerian civil servants that retirement is not an end but the start of a new chapter filled with opportunities. Speaking at the 2nd Edition of the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) Executive Prospective Retirees Conference, she emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and fulfilling retirement process for federal workers.

The conference, a collaboration between the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and JFK Abiona Consultancy Limited, targeted senior civil servants on Salary Grade Levels 14–17 who are within two years of retirement. Mrs. Walson-Jack highlighted the initiative’s alignment with Pillar Six of the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan 2021–2025 (FCSSIP 25), which focuses on enhancing staff welfare and productivity.

Preparing for a Productive Post-Service Life
Mrs. Walson-Jack outlined several pre-retirement programs designed to equip civil servants for life after service. These include the Agripreneurship Programme and Business Start-Up and Entrepreneurship Programmes, which aim to empower retirees with the skills needed to thrive in new ventures.

She stressed the importance of proactive retirement planning, covering critical areas such as understanding retirement benefits, financial planning, health and wellness, and the “golden rules of retirement.” Her message was clear: retirement is not a full stop but a comma, opening doors to new possibilities.

Government Support for Retirees
The HCSF highlighted various government initiatives aimed at supporting retirees, including affordable housing, health insurance, cooperative societies, and reintegration training. These programs are designed to ensure that retirees can maintain a high quality of life and remain active contributors to society.

Mrs. Walson-Jack encouraged retirees to explore opportunities in entrepreneurship, consultancy, volunteering, or other meaningful pursuits. “Retirement is not an end, but a new beginning filled with opportunities,” she said, urging workers to embrace this phase with optimism and preparedness.

Equipping Retirees for the Future
Permanent Secretary of the Service Welfare Office, Mrs. Oyekunle Patience Nwakuso, emphasized the conference’s role within the Federal Civil Service Entrepreneurship Programme. She noted that the event equips retirees with essential skills for a smooth transition, covering topics such as self-management, blockchain technology, and strategic business plan development.

The conference also serves as a platform for retirees to network, share experiences, and gain insights into emerging trends and opportunities in the post-service world.

Why This Matters
The government’s focus on retirement preparedness reflects a broader commitment to the well-being of its workforce. By empowering civil servants to plan for life after service, Nigeria is not only enhancing individual lives but also fostering a culture of productivity and innovation that extends beyond the workplace.
