olitical Turmoil Escalates
The Osun State political crisis has reached a boiling point, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) calling on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency following reports of violence and casualties.
The opposition’s demand was made on Monday during a heated discussion on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, argued that security in the state had deteriorated to dangerous levels.
Adeleke Govt Rejects APC’s Call
The Osun State Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi, strongly rejected the APC’s request, accusing the opposition of deliberately inciting violence to justify their push for federal intervention.
“We urge our amiable president to reject this call. They are the ones orchestrating the chaos to achieve their agenda,” Alimi stated.
Deadly Clashes & Police Intervention
The crisis intensified when reinstated Local Government Chairmen and Councillors—backed by an alleged court ruling—attempted to retake their offices across the 30 local government areas. Their actions met resistance, leading to violent clashes in Osogbo, Ikire, and Irewole.
At least two people, including a reinstated chairman, Remi Abbas, were killed.
IGP Deploys Tactical Squads
In response, Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has ordered the deployment of additional security forces to restore order. The police have condemned the violence, vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
With tensions still high, all eyes are on the Federal Government to see whether it will intervene or push for a political resolution to the crisis.
