Former Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a powerful message of resilience and unity at the 56th NAACP Image Awards on Saturday night. While accepting the prestigious Chairman’s Award, Harris emphasized that the future of America will be shaped not by those in power or the wealthy elite, but by the collective efforts of its people.

A Message of Empowerment
In her acceptance speech, Harris declared, “This chapter will be written, not simply by whoever occupies the Oval Office, nor by the wealthiest among us. The American story will be written by We the People.”

Her remarks were interpreted by some as a subtle critique of current President Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who is spearheading major reforms through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). However, Harris’ broader message focused on the enduring strength and determination of ordinary Americans.

Honoring the NAACP’s Legacy
Harris reflected on the history of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), which was founded in 1909 during a time of deep-seated inequality and injustice. She praised the organization’s founders for their courage and vision, stating, “They had no illusions about the forces they were up against, no illusions about how stony the road would be.”

The NAACP Image Awards’ Chairman’s Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to public service and used their platforms to advocate for justice and social change. Harris joins a distinguished list of past recipients, including former President Barack Obama, Samuel L. Jackson, Amanda Gorman, and Tyler Perry.

Celebrating the Wayans Family
The event also honored the Wayans family, who were inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame for their groundbreaking contributions to film, television, and comedy. Family members recognized at the ceremony included Keenen Ivory Wayans, Kim Wayans, Damon Wayans Jr., Damon Wayans Sr., Marlon Wayans, and Shawn Wayans.

A Call to Action
Harris’ speech served as both a celebration of progress and a call to action. She reminded the audience that the fight for justice and equality is far from over, urging Americans to continue working together to shape a brighter future.

“The American story is not defined by one person or one moment,” she said. “It is written every day by the courage, resilience, and determination of We the People.”
