“Christian Leaders Sound Alarm Over Killing of Clergymen in Southern Kaduna”

A Tragic Pattern of Violence
The Southern Kaduna Christian Leaders Association (SKCLA) has raised the alarm over the increasing killings of clergymen in the region. The latest victim, Rev. Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu of the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan, was recently kidnapped and murdered, adding to a growing list of attacks on religious leaders in the area.

A Call for Action
In a statement issued by its Chairman, Apostle Dr. Emmanuel Nuhu Kure, the SKCLA expressed deep sorrow over the loss and called on the Federal Government and security agencies to address the escalating insecurity. “This act is not only a painful loss to the Church but also a disturbing indication of the worsening insecurity in the country,” the statement read.

The association extended its condolences to the Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan, particularly to Bishop Julius Yakubu Kundi, and urged the government to take decisive action before the situation spirals out of control.

A Troubling History
The murder of Rev. Fr. Okechukwu is part of a disturbing pattern of attacks on clergymen in Southern Kaduna. The SKCLA highlighted past incidents, including the abduction and killing of Rev. Fr. John Mark Cheitnum in 2022 and the assassination of Pastor Musa Mairiga of the ECWA Church.

“These repeated assaults on men of God raise serious concerns: Is this a deliberate and systematic attack on Christians, particularly priests and pastors?” the statement questioned.

Fears of Religious Tensions
The Christian leaders expressed concern that the targeted killings of clergymen could take on a religious undertone, potentially undermining the fragile peace in Kaduna State. “We hope that both Federal and State security apparatus will do something drastic to check this before it begins to carry a religious undertone that might undermine the hard-earned peace in the state,” the SKCLA warned.

Why This Matters
The killings of clergymen in Southern Kaduna highlight the broader issue of insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in regions plagued by violence. The targeted nature of these attacks raises questions about the motives behind them and underscores the urgent need for improved security measures to protect vulnerable communities.

What’s Next?
The SKCLA’s call for action puts pressure on the government and security agencies to address the root causes of the violence and ensure the safety of religious leaders and their congregations. The international community and human rights organizations are also likely to monitor the situation closely.
