Former Jigawa Governor Calls for Strategic Opposition Unity
As Nigeria inches closer to the 2027 general elections, the battle lines in the country’s political landscape are becoming clearer. Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has sent a strong message to opposition leaders: unite under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or risk another defeat at the hands of President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Lamido made these remarks during an annual Ramadan breakfast gathering with PDP leaders and supporters from all 27 local government areas of Jigawa State. The event, held at his residence in Bamaina, Birninkudu Local Government Area, became a political rallying point, focusing on Nigeria’s worsening economic situation, the APC’s governance failures, and the need for a strong opposition movement.
‘APC Has Failed Nigerians’ – Lamido Slams Tinubu’s Government
Expressing deep concern over the deteriorating economy, inflation, and rising hardship across the country, Lamido criticized the APC government, accusing it of lacking direction and failing to deliver on its promises.
“The APC has lost focus. Nigerians are suffering under its rule. If the opposition remains divided, we will be making it easier for Tinubu to continue in power,” he warned.
He emphasized that opposition figures must rise above personal grievances and work toward a common goal. “This struggle is not about personal disappointments but about saving Nigeria from the catastrophe of APC rule,” he added.
‘Come Back to PDP and Let’s Rebuild Nigeria’ – Lamido Appeals to Defectors

One of Lamido’s strongest appeals was directed at former PDP leaders who defected to the APC and other parties. He urged them to return to their political roots and join forces to reclaim power in 2027.
Lamido specifically mentioned top political figures, including:
-
Rotimi Amaechi (Former Rivers State Governor & Ex-Minister of Transportation)
-
Nasir El-Rufai (Former Kaduna State Governor)
-
Rabiu Kwankwaso (Former Kano State Governor & NNPP Leader)
-
Aliyu Wamakko (Former Sokoto State Governor)
He argued that many of these politicians had faced betrayal and persecution within the APC and should consider rejoining the PDP, which originally gave them a platform to rise in Nigerian politics.
“There is no shame in returning to the PDP. It is the party that made many of you who you are today,” Lamido stated.
SDP, NNPP Cannot Defeat Tinubu – Only PDP Can, Says Lamido
Lamido dismissed the notion that alternative parties like the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) could successfully challenge the APC’s dominance in 2027.
According to him, only the PDP has the national structure, grassroots presence, and political influence required to defeat Tinubu.
“Smaller parties do not have the strength to take on the APC. If we are serious about change, we must consolidate our efforts under a strong and well-established party like the PDP,” he asserted.

This remark comes amid growing speculation that opposition leaders, including El-Rufai and Kwankwaso, are looking to build an alternative political coalition ahead of the next elections. However, Lamido remains firm in his belief that a fragmented opposition will only strengthen Tinubu’s hold on power.
Can the PDP Unite Before 2027?
While Lamido’s call for unity is gaining traction, it also raises major questions:
-
Will Amaechi, El-Rufai, Kwankwaso, and others return to the PDP?
-
Can the party put aside internal divisions and personal ambitions?
-
Is the PDP ready to present a united front against Tinubu?
With 2027 fast approaching, the coming months will be crucial in shaping the battle for Nigeria’s political future. Will the opposition listen to Lamido’s advice, or will internal conflicts allow Tinubu and the APC to maintain their grip on power?
One thing is certain—Nigeria’s political landscape is about to get even more intense.
